From Pool to Leadership - How Sport Builds Women’s Confidence

Swimming towards empowerment: how sport helps women gain confidence and lead change

When women gain confidence, entire communities benefit. They become role models for younger generations, break stereotypes, and help create a culture of inclusion.or stroke. Sport is not just about physical health; it is a powerful tool for personal empowerment, especially for women facing societal barriers or personal challenges.

Across Europe, women are still underrepresented in sport. According to EU statistics, only 14% of leadership roles in sports organizations are held by women. This gap isn’t just about numbers; it’s about missed opportunities to harness women’s potential to lead, inspire, and innovate.

The What Women Need (WIN) project is working to change this reality. By providing safe, inclusive spaces where women can train, share experiences, and develop leadership skills, WIN is turning participants into changemakers.

“When women join sports, they don’t just gain strength and stamina,” says Marina Penić Levada, President of Finswimming Team Novi Jelkovec. “They also build confidence and learn how to take initiative — in sport, at work, and in their communities.”

Swimming has been particularly impactful for women in Novi Jelkovec. Starting as a simple physical activity, it evolves into a confidence-building experience. Instructors encourage participants to set personal goals, face fears, and celebrate achievements — a process that mirrors the steps needed to grow as leaders.

One participant shared her journey:
“At first, I was afraid of the water. But each session gave me more courage. Today, I not only swim regularly, but I also mentor younger girls in my neighborhood. Sport taught me that I can lead.”
